The letters start when Winston is only eight and continue until Jennie&#8217;s death forty years later. The letters are fascinating. You see Winston&#8217;s development: his cunning, his \u00a0deviousness even from such an early age. But what is most poignant is the change in this complicated relationship: Winston, early on so reliant on his mother and later, after the death of her husband Lord Randolph (syphilis?) and a string of unhappy love affairs, how Jennie becomes so reliant on her son. I have been booked for an astonishing SIX days to record this (there are a lot of letters!).
